What we do...

Product Development and Business Management

For critical "time to market" products, Bill Evans and his international colleagues provide the technical expertise and program management for product development from any step in the process, including from concept, to secured manufacturing and distribution. Over the years, TECHMAN/KANATA, has become known as the skill and experience "between a design and a great product".

With over 35 years of product experience, Bill assembles a highly competent team of professionals to achieve the client's global product requirements. These teams often include product development firms, production technical experts, manufacturing and distribution consultants, marketing and sales professionals, industrial designers/engineers, software and systems engineers, and regulatory engineers and compliance experts. We bring to the project whatever skills that are needed for product success.

Bill can involve and closely manage skilled and reputable offshore product development firms, consultants, and contractors. This offshore approach often affords clients less time to market and lower product development costs.

Bill focuses the team and resources on product manufacturability from the outset of development. This results in a design that can be cost effectively produced with minimal time to production. Manufacturing contractors are involved but not selected before sufficient development is completed and with a goal to competitively source production. The various phases of the overall development program are devised and executed to meet a detailed plan that includes the required manufacturing outcomes. The team remains available until the process is complete and the manufacturing goals are met.

Bill Evans' business and senior management background also affords clients experience in enterprise development and management, complex contract negotiations, vendor reconciliation and management, and technology/product/operations acquisitions. Prior to undertaking product development clients should consider alternative means to bringing product to market, such as licensing and joint ventures. If an alternative is the best means to market we provide planning, product make ready, joint venture/licensee search and qualification, contract negotiations, and ongoing support

For all the industries we serve we provide manufacturing outsourcing, offshoring, and product cost reduction. Proper execution of outsourcing requires a detailed plan of action. This implementation plan must be devised from a careful review of the factors contributing to requiring outsourcing and account for all the implications, including organizational, financial, new product development, management etc., of outsourcing. This plan is only complete if it is based on a thorough firsthand knowledge of the manufacturing contracting industry. TECHMAN/KANATA has extensive international contracting industry experience.

Careful analysis should be done before undertaking outsourcing or offshoring. Often companies don't realize their own uniqueness and ignore or are not aware of the true industrial circumstances or capabilities of both offshore and onshore.

Moving offshore should be to gain more than immediate manufacturing cost reduction. Being offshore should be to draw on the technology and human resources that is part of this lower cost environment for product engineering and development, operations, and distribution. Being there should also be to open up markets or to sell into growing markets. Onshore outsourcing can be to capture similar benefits.

Product cost reduction or re-engineering can be a key element to quality betterment, more productive manufacturing, and cost effective procurement of parts and services. Often we are asked to cost reduce a product in production. This requires applying the client's and our technical and engineering skills to the program and in effectively managing the process. Determining the needed technical skills and matching these with the product type, market/applications, production processes and related technologies is critical. Often major cost savings are found in the product support and parts procurement functions and in the non-technical aspects of the product or production process. Product cost reduction/analysis is also a discipline that needs to be part of the clients Product Development process and skills and our experience can help achieve that.

Foreign based companies bringing product to the North American (NA) market look to us to localize the design, re-design for regulatory review, and to secure regulatory compliance. We provide vendor sourcing, supply analysis, and supplier reconciliation and onsite management. We assist in joint venture and partnership development, negotiations, and management.

TECHMAN/KANATA works to minimize costs, maximize savings, and with minimal disruption to the client and its operations. We bring pertinent skills and experience to all projects and therefore we are not learning our skills on the client's dollar. Involving our skills and experience helps assure that our client's product development, manufacturing, operations, and financial goals are met.
