Utility player - don't underestimate it
Not every employee is a superstar, although we'd all like that to be the case. In a large group of people you will get superstars, "ordinary" stars, and average, but solid, team members. This latter group are your utility players and don't underestimate the value and the potential of this group. Find out what motivates them, continue to challenge them, and look at job re-assignment or skills training to maximize their potential. Some people adapt to change better than others. Of course, business and team objectives come first and determine what needs to be done. Incompetent or insubordinate staff must be weeded out. But take another look at those solid and reliable team members. Work with them to set new goals and maximize their contribution to the organization. Mentor them along with your super stars. Team utility and super stars to work together on projects or problems. You might be surprised at what they can do given a new challenge or responsibility.

Useful - be it
Be useful; be a facilitator and a contributor. Lead, support and inspire. Don't be an obstacle.
