Waste
Is the product covered by some of the international standards, policies and laws: e.g. WEEE, SB 20/50? If not, will it be reclassified in the future… and how will you know? If so, What components, parts or subsystems can't be recycled, reused or reclaimed?
Should the product be easily upgradable and designed to efficiently (EG wise) foster the development of a product family? Does any expected technology need further R&D? If so, can the technology be developed to be recyclable? If not, can substitute technologies be used?
Consumer / Environmental health
Is the product covered by some of the international standards, policies and laws: e.g. RoHS, Prop. 65? If not, will it be reclassified in the future… and how will you know? If so, What potential, major components, parts or subsystems are hazardous? Can substitutes be found - should they? Does any expected material need further R&D? If so, can the material be developed to meet the required minimal levels of hazardous substance laws?
Limited resources & energy
Is the product destined for Green markets? If so, can it meet expectations? I.e., Will the product be a power hog? If so, what technologies can be considered to reduce consumption? Does any expected technology need further R&D? If so, can the technology be developed to be power-stingy?
Will any power and resource-hungry processes be required to produce and support the product? If so, what alternate processes can be substituted (via product design changes) to reduce such use? Do any expected technologies or processes supporting production and support need further R&D? If so, can they be developed to be resource and power-stingy?
Product safety & liability
What potential components, subsystems, processes and methodologies pose safety and liability problems for the handlers, users and surrounding facilities and environment? If there are any, what can be changed to minimize or eliminate (preferably) such issues?
The Product Requirements Specification (PRS) is created in this phase and must be directed by the business, operational and technical guidelines in the MRD. All technical EG claims considered for the design should be contained in the PRS.
