Fungus/Growing stuff -
A moist or dirty environment (internal or external to a product) can provide fungus (mildew, mold) and bacteria a nourishing environment. This can cause growth buildup between sensitive electronic circuits or components, which may result in a short circuit; in mechanical equipment it can inhibit proper operation. Problems can arise if a product is well protected, but a door or hatch (e.g. battery compartment, PC card, etc.) which allows access can be an entry point for growing stuff.
Examples of Fungus / growing stuff product failures:
- Bacteria invading drugs or food containers is always bad.
- Fungus growth in portable electronic equipment used in the topics can render the product inoperative unless periodic maintenance is planned.
- Wood rot within structural lumber, log homes, eaves, garage doors, exterior door trim, window casings and other wood used in construction can be prevented with use of proper material and/or treatment with anti-rot material.
