IN 3rd PARTY ENCUMBRANCES

Third Party Encumbrances can pose extremely difficult roadblocks to a product's (and company's) success. These are barriers over which a company has none or very little control. Therefore a PD effort must be aware of, or try to anticipate, all such obstacles that the product may face.

Regulatory agencies.
Almost all products containing biological, flammable, reactive chemical compounds (batteries included), digital and power circuitry require compliance to some regulatory agencies - by law.

What to do about it!
Research the governing agencies and regulations (domestic and foreign) to which your product must comply and then do comply - DO NOT CHEAT. Cheating can break a product line and a company if caught by the pertinent agency or from reactions from an abused user. This means you should plan (budget and resources) to comply… and use experienced help if you don't know how to go about complying. Following are examples of such agencies:
  • UL, CSA, TUV, VCCI, CE.
  • FCC, DHHS, FDA.
  • OSHA, NEC.
