Industry Standards.
Many products need to comply with industry standards in order to be marketed or… even to compete in some markets and localities.

What to do about it!
Research the standards to which your product must conform; many standards are imposed not only by the government, but also by purchasers themselves, or municipalities and organized groups. Examples of standards and groups that require compliance are:
- Industry: ISO/QS (auto), AS9000 (aerospace), Telcordia / NEBS (network equipment & building standards), HACCP (Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points); cGMP (current good manufacturing practices); Ingress Protection & Environmental; SEMI, SAE.
- Municipal: LA County, Dade County.
- Brotherhood: Electricians, Stage Workers.

Social barriers.
Product developers should be aware of social sensibilities to specific products in order to be competitive within certain market segments.

What to do about it!
Try not to tread on religious, political or cultural issues with a product if it is not purposely intended to do so. Also, security and privacy considerations, among others, need be considered. Trespassing in any of these areas can limit a product's acceptance.
