The technology is not validated.
New and yet-to-be-proven technology can debilitate a product development effort if performance, functionality and compliance have not yet been authenticated.

What to do about it!
Technology must be 'mature' to be usable within its context of use: i.e. the technology's functionality, performance, compliance, robustness and manufacturability need to fit the requirements of the product. If the new technology has not been validated within the appropriate context then the project needs to account for the resources, budget and schedule to handle the technology's validation in addition to the product's validation.

The technology is not readily available.
Technology that is not available when needed for development or production will delay entry into the market.

What to do about it!
New, popular or obsolete technology can tend to be scarce at times. A small company usually does not get to the front of the 'feeding line' when many others (especially large companies) are competing for the scarce technology. Design with technology that is assured to be available or establish production schedules to take inconsistent deliveries into account. Selecting a manufacturer who has good purchasing power and has other clients who use the specific technology can also help.
