IDEAS

Corporate predisposition and inertia.
These effects can sometimes weaken efforts of PD funding, innovation, schedule, intention and product entry into the market.

What to do about it!
Navigate through company inertia and culture:
  • Research why a certain impediment exists.
  • Sometimes acting first and asking later is efficient, but be ware of political backlash that may render the action less efficient than living with the impediment.
  • Request an exemption.
  • Request reconsideration of the impediment.
  • Define, justify and defend the rules and structure you think best accomplishes the PD goals.
  • Get buy-in to the PD effort from all key players, as well as, up-front commitment by senior management.
A great way to manage this is to use face-to-face interactions with the people who fashion or manage the 'inertia'. This can break down corporate-cultural barriers and increase chances that these people will understand the need for change. Emails and phone calls are OK to set up meetings, but go and talk directly to these people, even if it involves traveling.1
