So... where does all this fit into the Product Development process?
First we need to analyze one more detail of the PD Process. The following figure illustrates a common, real world PD process and shows where the previously discussed roadblocks can best be addressed and countered.
The major features of this figure:
- The phases:
- Phase 1 - Technology Validation is where the basis IP concept is conceived, invented and validated. This usually occurs in a basic or industrial research environment.
- Phase 2 - Business Feasibility is where a business plan based on a product concept (and the IP) is created and deemed to be a worthwhile venture.
- Phase 3 - Project Concept & Feasibility is where a project to support the execution of the business plan is formulated and justified.
- Phase 4 - Product Concept & Feasibility is where the actual product is defined in detail to utilize the IP, fit the market, competitive and user requirements and fulfill the business plan provisions.
- Phase 5 - Product Development & Validation is where the product architecture, design, implementation, test and technical verification are completed.
- Phase 6 - Pre-production & Validation is where the product design is transferred into a designed manufacturing and QC-controlled process. The production process and the resulting product manufactured by the process are then validated.
- Phase 7 - Production Start is where suppliers become fully integrated, the assembly processes are fully operating, the essential quality checks are monitoring production variances and product is being shipped via distribution channels into the market.
- Phase 8 - Production and Market Sustaining is where the production and distribution channels are suitably maintained and the customer is supported via warranties, call-centers, repair depots, etc.
