Each stage of the GPEP contains the general process flow depicted in Figure 2 and described in more detail following:
- Inputs - These are the deliverables (action items for this stage) from the previous stage where they were approved and funded. These action items must be completed in this stage.
- Design - The technologies and processes described in the deliverables are designed and, in case of anomalies, contingencies are established.
- Review - The designs and processes are reviewed for completeness, accuracy and for hazards or faults.
- Implement - The designs are rendered by technology and the processes rendered by managers. Change control for subsequent changes to any process or design is implemented.
- Test - The implementation is tested to the pre-established requirements to ensure the design or process is correct.
- Outputs - A new set of deliverables based on the activities completed in this stage are derived. These are reviewed, approved and funding is guaranteed for the next stage (should there be one).
Change control is absolutely required in this process, since the pertinent participants must be able to assess the impacts of any changes in the market, competition, user needs, regulatory and business requirements. Also an audit trail of pertinent decisions and product and process modifications must be created (this is required by various regulatory agencies and management standards).
