Definitions: Development Functions
The following functions are common efforts used within any product development project. It will be demonstrated how these can be related to the previously defined Cost Categories to indicate where project funds are best allotted.
- Generating Design Concepts
- Assessing Risks (State-of-the-art technologies, manufacturability, team knowledge, funding, timing)
- Researching Designs and Processes
- Project planning and Set-up (resources, facilities, equipment)
- Generating Specifications & Requirements
- Designing & Implementing
- Developing Tooling
- Fabricating & Testing 'Breadboards', EVT (Engineering Verification Test)
- Establishing Manufacturing, Service, & Quality2 management Processes
- Testing for Regulatory, Environmental3 management, Legal, Industry and Corporate Requirements
- Testing Prototype functionality & Beta Models, DVT (Design Verification Test), FDA Verification
- Re-Spinning Design & Tests
- Supporting Pre-production Ramp-up
- Debugging and validating Manufacturing, Service, Environmental & QA Processes
- Qualifying the Production Line- PVT (Production/Process Verification Test)
- Qualifying the Product, Product Validation
