Compatibility {#14} determines where and with what a product is used; it influences:

  • General product risks, market selection and user type
  • Product performance and validation
  • Documentation, training, service and support
  • Production processes, tests, tools and equipment
  • Technology selection and product validation
  • Selection of suppliers and production facilities
  • Selection of ancillary products and components
  • User demands
  • Environmental and regulatory standards compliance
  • End-of-Life requirements and procedures
  • For example, If the market expects a product to perform well in a certain environment, say below freezing temperatures, then it must be designed and validated to operate there even if the product developer did not intend such operation.  Also, if a product is claimed to be portable, then a customer will attempt to operate the product wherever the customer chooses to go.
