Compatibility {#14} determines where and with what a product is used; it influences:
- General product risks, market selection and user type
- Product performance and validation
- Documentation, training, service and support
- Production processes, tests, tools and equipment
- Technology selection and product validation
- Selection of suppliers and production facilities
- Selection of ancillary products and components
- User demands
- Environmental and regulatory standards compliance
- End-of-Life requirements and procedures
For example, If the market expects a product to perform well in a certain environment, say below freezing temperatures, then it must be designed and validated to operate there even if the product developer did not intend such operation. Also, if a product is claimed to be portable, then a customer will attempt to operate the product wherever the customer chooses to go.
