Harry T. Garland

Dr. Harry T. Garland is Chairman of Garland Actuarial LLC. He holds a B.A. degree in mathematics from Kalamazoo College, and a Ph.D. degree in biophysics from Stanford University. He has written three books and has been awarded 20 U.S. patents.

He has served on the faculty of Stanford University and as assistant chairman of the department of electrical engineering. He was co-founder of Cromemco, Inc. and served as president of the company for twelve years. During this time, Cromemco became a leading computer systems company, and a major supplier of mission planning systems to the United States Air Force. Following the sale of Cromemco, Harry joined Canon, a $30 billon company, as vice president of Canon Research Center America, a position he held for eleven years.

Harry co-founded Garland Actuarial LLC in 2001 with his wife, Roberta. Garland Actuarial's clients include some of the nation's largest and most highly esteemed companies. Garland Actuarial serves its clients in providing actuarial analyses for financial reporting and risk management, preparing statements of actuarial opinion for statutory purposes, and offering expert witness testimony. Garland Actuarial is also widely recognized as having pioneered the application of actuarial techniques to the analysis of financial reserving for gift certificates and gift cards. Harry is the author or co-author of more than 50 published papers, but is proudest of the latest, "Preparation for High School Chemistry: The Effects of a Summer School Course on Student Achievement." co-authored with his daughter, Dr. Eva R. Garland.

2008 update: Garland Actuarial is having a record year, but even more exciting is the company I have started with my son-in-law, Christian Melander, Ph.D. Christian has developed a compound that fights bacterial infection in a totally new way: by inhibiting the growth of bacterial biofilms.
